Thermal properties of manganese-doped ZnO polycrystalline films

The thermal conductivity and heat capacity of manganese-doped zinc oxide polycrystals have been studied in the temperature range 30–300 K. A substantial influence of the secondary phase or MnO clusters formed as a result of doping on the temperature dependences of thermophysical properties of polycrystalline zinc oxide films has been shown.

Gold‐Catalyzed Intermolecular C?S Bond Formation: Efficient Synthesis of α‐Substituted Vinyl Sulfones

A general method for the synthesis of α‐substituted vinyl sulfones makes use of a combination of a triazole gold complex and gallium triflate. This efficient C S bond formation between simple terminal alkynes and sulfinic acids provides access to various α‐substituted vinyl sulfones.     

Beta decay and other processes in strong electromagnetic fields

We consider effects of the fields of strong electromagnetic waves on various characteristics of quantum processes. After a qualitative discussion of the effects of external fields on the energy spectra and angular distributions of the final-state particles as well as on the total probabilities of the processes (such as decay rates and total cross sections), we present a simple method of calculating the total probabilities of processes with production of nonrelativistic charged particles. Using nuclear β decay as an example, we study the weak- and strong-field limits, as well as the field-induced β decay of nuclei stable in the absence of the external fields, both in the tunneling and multiphoton regimes. We also consider the possibility of accelerating forbidden nuclear β decays by lifting the forbiddeness due to the interaction of the parent or daughter nuclei with the field of a strong electromagnetic wave. It is shown that for currently attainable electromagnetic fields all effects on total β-decay rates are unobservably small.     

Reversed Cation Selectivity of G8‐Octamer and G16‐Hexadecamer towards Monovalent and Divalent Cations

A reverse‐binding‐selectivity between monovalent and divalent cations was observed for two different self‐assembly G₁₆‐hexadecamer and G₈‐octamer systems. The dissociation constant between G₄‐quadruplex and monomer was calculated via VT‐¹H NMR experiments. Quantitative energy profiles revealed entropy as the key factor for the weaker binding toward Ba²⁺ compared with K⁺ in the G₈‐octamer system despite stronger ion‐dipole interactions. This study is the first direct comparison of the G₄‐quartet binding affinity between mono and divalent cations and will benefit future applications of G‐quadruplex‐related research. Further competition experiments between the G₈‐octamer and 18‐crown‐6 with K⁺ demonstrated the potential of this G₈ system as a new potassium receptor.

Construction of exotic smooth structures

In this article, we construct infinitely many simply connected, nonsymplectic and pairwise nondiffeomorphic 4-manifolds starting from the elliptic surfaces E(n) and applying the sequence of knot surgery, ordinary blowups and rational blowdown. We also compute the Seiberg-Witten invariants of these manifolds.

Simplicial vs. continuum string theory and loop equations

We derive loop equations in a scalar matrix field theory. We discuss their solutions in terms of simplicial string theory—the theory describing embeddings of two-dimensional simplicial complexes into the spacetime of the matrix field theory. This relation between the loop equations and the simplicial string theory gives further arguments that favor one of the statements of the paper hep-th/0407018. The statement is that there is an equivalence between the partition function of the simplicial string theory and the functional integral in a continuum string theory—the theory describing embeddings of smooth two-dimensional world-sheets into the spacetime of the matrix field theory in question.
